About our Organic Methods
To keep our plants strong and disease free, we supply them with optimum nutrition, continually adding composted natural nutrients, produced on the farm, and various organic compost teas, micro-organisms, and mineral-rich foliar applications. But the real magic is our peat bog – our blueberries thrive in the unique rich, acidic soils.
In a natural system, with healthy plants, diseases have a hard time taking hold. We monitor health conditions, plant by plant each season. Most of the insects in the blueberries are our friends - ladybugs help keep other pests at bay and our local bees work hard each year to pollinate. Damaging bugs are picked off by hand. To prevent fungal infections we hand pick fallen berries from the ground to prevent overwintering fungal diseases. In addition, we rake the rows in fall and spring and we mulch to prevent spread of unwanted spores.
Organically grown produce takes a lot of work and natural inputs can be costly, BUT growing naturally helps to provide a sustainable future for all of us and is the only clear choice for Avalon Farm!
